Meet Our Team

Located in Lincoln and serving all of Nebraska since 1961, the Nebraska Safety Council’s mission is to provide education and leadership to empower people to live safe and healthy. Our passionate team of experts provides support and services to organizations of all sizes, across a wide range of industries throughout the state and surrounding areas. The Nebraska Safety Council’s comprehensive programs, training courses, events, and services are designed to improve employee care at a desk, on the production floor, behind the wheel, and off the job. Our unique Worker 360° approach provides integrated risk management that reduces health and injury-related costs, boosts worker engagement, and improves overall worker quality of life while positively impacting an organization’s bottom line.

Executive Director
Lisa has more than 27 years of experience in corporate wellness and prevention. Lisa previously led WorkWell for 22 years as she performed and managed various projects. Lisa left WorkWell in 2012 to lead the implementation of the 2-year $8.5M CDC National Healthy Worksite Program, a new comprehensive human risk improvement cost containment management program. Lisa has been awarded the Governor’s Excellence in Leadership Recognition by Governor Dave Heineman in 2012, Healthy Innovation Award Program Finalist by Centers for Disease Control in 2011, LiveHealthy Nebraska Star Award by Nebraska Sports Council in 2011, and Well City Lincoln Award in 2000.
Chris Blum

Chris Blum

Business Development Manager
As the Business Development Manager Chris provides strategic vision and professional leadership to our members and staff. He works to deepen the engagement of our current members while attracting new businesses and organizations to become members. He builds long-term relationships with members, community partners and state-wide organizations to engage them with NeSC programs and services. He has 25 years of experience in non-profit leadership, most recently as the CEO for the Boy Scouts here in Lincoln. He is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University. He and his wife Lori are Nebraska natives (Omaha and Wahoo) and they have a son, CJ. Chris enjoys fitness, golf, charity running events, and triathlons. He coaches junior high cross-country and serves as a volunteer YMCA Coach and Cub Scout Leader.
Ric Voelker

Senior Trainer and Consultant
Ric has been with NESC since January 2017. He has been an adult instructor since 2004 and brings a vast amount of experience and knowledge from work in law enforcement. He has been focused in workplace safety since 2006 and continues to grow and expand his skillset in this specialty. His enthusiasm to share his experience has made a big impression on those who work with him.

Valerie Haschke, She/Her/Hers

Director of Operations
Valerie Haschke, Director of Operations, ACE Certified Health Coach, joined our team in 2015 as the Workplace Staff Assistant, eventually moving into the Client Relations position, and most recently became an Ace Certified Health Coach. Valerie’s Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a Certificate of Gerontology helps with her success building relationships with our members. Her passion lies with wellness and helping others with lifestyle changes. She herself lives by example on a daily basis and focuses much of her personal time on exercise and good nutrition choices.

Karen Rehm

Wellness Services Manager
Karen joined the NESC team in 2020 and brings 18+ years’ experience working with business and community leaders in building comprehensive health and safety programs. As the NESC Wellness Services Manager, Karen partners with administrative teams, insurance brokers and wellness and safety committees to create and implement engaging wellness and safety initiatives. Karen specializes in developing outcome based interventional programs and services designed to increase on the job safety and reduce work related injuries, increase productivity, reduce absenteeism and improve the bottom line for Nebraska businesses. Karen and her husband Gerry are huge Husker fans and enjoy NE football, volleyball, basketball, soccer…and family trips to Minnesota.

Doha Toma

First Aid/AED/CPR Instructor
Doha joined NESC in 2021 as a First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor. She has 10 years of experience in the medical field (trauma and DHHS). Doha earned her Bachelors in Biochemistry from UNL and was recently accepted into UNL as a graduate student to work towards her doctorate as a Mental Health Practitioner, specializing in children with Autism. She is currently working towards her Health Coaching Certification and will also cover some safety training for us in the future.

Joe Gehr

Road Safety Coordinator
Joe Gehr joined NESC in 2021 after working in Law Enforcement for the past 31 years. During his years in law enforcement, he worked in a variety of areas. Joe started out in the Patrol Division where he was a forensic child interviewer and on the Accident Investigation Team. Joe also worked in the Courts Division and in the Civil Division. Prior to retiring, Joe worked as the School Resource Officer for the Norris School District. Joe is married and has a daughter. He enjoys cooking, watching sports and going on bike rides. Joe is excited to bring his years of experience to this position.

Saige Walker

Traffic Safety and Education Manager
Saige joined the team in 2019 and is the face you see at the front desk. She started as a part-time Office Support Assistant, quickly proving to be a key staff member and moving full-time. She is often the first person you'll hear when you call in to our offices. She moved to Lincoln in 2019 from Alliance, NE and enjoys spending time with her family.

Syd Horken

Safety Coordinator
Syd graduated with a Bachelors in History from the University of Nebraska in May of 2020. Syd is passionate about public service, advocacy for marginalized groups, and creating a safe and healthy community. In their free time, Syd is an avid house plant collector and spends most of their time with their two cats and their partner, Libby.

Sheila is excited to serve NESC clients. She will be instrumental in assisting with safety programs and will be trained to support the wellness and traffic programs.
